First of all, I am not often the one to jump on the miracle cure bandwagon. If something boasts amazing and fast results, it tends to be too good to be true, am I right?
Apple cider vinegar fell on that list for me. All I knew of it prior to a week or so ago was that apparently it has amazing results, and that people are taking shots of it straight. Out of curiosity, I did try that one time, and I had no inclination to do it again.
But two things changed my mind – first, I started to get sick of that icky bloated feeling, which was happening a little too often. And second, a friend told me she saw benefits from doing it. Even my husband, the healthier of the two of us, thought I should look into it. So I figured I would give it a shot.
Are you curious about whether apple cider vinegar really works? The results actually surprised even me.
Here are some things that happened when I took apple cider vinegar for a week.

1. It’s not as bad as you think.
Shooting straight apple cider vinegar is disgusting. But that’s not actually the way to go about taking apple cider vinegar. Due to its high acidity, you really need to take only a couple diluted tablespoons at a time – thanks to PopSugar for that tip.
PopSugar’s recipe is the one I’ve been following, which is:
- 2 tablespoons of ACV
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- 1 glass of water
Mix all together. It actually tastes like strong, slightly more acidic apple cider. But it’s sweet and so much more pleasant to drink. Take it on an empty stomach, right before you eat, because it will aid in blocking starch digestion.
2. It definitely cuts down on bloating.
I noticed a difference the first day. It makes my stomach feel less swollen, even without changing my eating habits. Although just for the record, it doesn’t make the weight around the stomach disappear.
Also my appetite has been down, but I’m not sure whether that’s due to the ACV or not. It’s also a possible benefit to ACV.
(Also important to note that I have been doing HIIT or circuit workouts four out of seven days this week. Apple cider vinegar doesn’t mean you should skip the gym completely.)
3. It does improve digestion.
I don’t want to over share, but my digestion definitely got better with taking the ACV. Apparently it contains both probiotics (that destroy harmful bacteria) and prebiotics (that nourish good bacteria), which is what helps.
4. It brings your energy up, too.
Another surprising thing? I feel more energy when taking ACV. I’m not completely getting rid of my cups of coffee, but I really do feel like there is a difference. I didn’t even know that was a potential benefit!
All in All
I have to say, I’m glad to be trying apple cider vinegar, and will continue to drink it once or twice a day. It’s making a difference and it’s a small thing that helps. Although again, it’s not a miracle cure that can replace working out or eating well.
Other benefits can include blood sugar control and lower cholesterol. It may help fight off colds. And next to try – as a hair rinse and as a mouth wash.
Have you tried apple cider vinegar at all? Do you like it?

I purchased a couple bottles of ACV a couple weeks ago and will give this recipe a try. You are right about not liking to drink it as a shot! I am 61 years young and will turn 62 later this year. People are shocked when I tell them my age, they say I could pass for a 45 year old which is great! But, I have noticed that I get tired faster and not able to do as much as I used to without having to rest after. Also having a lot of bloating and constipation. Hopefully this will help.
Wow, you must be taking care of yourself! I need all YOUR secrets! 🙂 I hope it works for you!
I’ve been taking it for about 2 weeks. I started it to bring my body to an alkaline state. I was binging soda for a few months and got my system out of wack and had a lot of belly bloat and joint pain due to acidic inflammation from the diet soda. In three days my tummy was flatter and the pain in my joints was nearly gone. In two weeks, I lost 10 pounds. Note: my diet (food) has always been healthy but I was soda addicted. I now physically feel better over all. I drink 4 tables spoons a day and have replaced soda with homemade strawberry lemonade. It’s early, but I can tell a difference if I miss one day.
That’s awesome! It’s surprising how much of a difference it makes, right? Happy for you to be feeling so much better!
