songs for baby

April 29, 2013 · In: uncategorized

Pictures of the baby shower to come tomorrow! Until then, here’s my solution to one of the party problems.
When I was searching for “baby shower playlists,” pretty much the only ones that came up were songs with the words “baby” or “babe” in them. Come on, baby showers, let’s be a little more original. I put together a playlist that is mellow enough to be background music, but fun and playful and whimsical enough to stand on their own at the same time. Most of them, though not directly about parents or babies, give the feel of imagination or parent/child love. Give them a whirl and see what you think.

Better Together – Jack Johnson
You Make Me Feel So Young – Frank Sinatra
Almost the whole Dan in Real Life soundtrack, but particularly: Modern Nature, To Be Surprised, Family Theme Waltz – Sondre Lerche
Sweet Pea – Amos Lee
All I Want Is You – Tristan Prettyman
Far Away – Ingrid Michaelson
What I Wouldn’t Do – A Fine Frenzy
1234 – Feist
You’ll Be In My Heart – Phil Collins
You’ve Got a Friend in Me – Michael Buble
Never Grow Up – Taylor Swift
Long Live – Taylor Swift
Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag – James Brown
Sh-Boom – The Chords
Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You – Lauren Hill
There’s Hope – India.Arie
Stay With You – John Legend
Blessed – Brett Dennen
Someday Soon – KT Tunstall
Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher) – Jackie Wilson
Strawberry Swing – Coldplay
I Want to Hold Your Hand – The Beatles
Home – Phillip Phillips
Unwritten – Natasha Bedingfield
The Scientist – Willie Nelson
I Will Wait – Mumford and Sons

This trend, but about what happens when you ditch This trend, but about what happens when you ditch performance and perfectionism for grace-filled growth.

This is not a to-do list, by the way. Not a resume or test or a title. (Not, “you are now proclaimed holy”.)

These are, I’ve found, holy experiences that get revealed as you take steps along this faith journey. This is what it looks like when you’re settling in to the transformation that happens when you lean in to the Spirit, follow Jesus, and get to know God better. A settling of the soul.

What kinda holy experiences have you encountered on your own unique journey with God?

Not to be dramatic, but… Everything changed when Not to be dramatic, but…
Everything changed when I started:

viewing stories of women in the scriptures with care and respect instead of making assumptions.

reading the Bible as God’s story, not morality tales about people.

recognizing that God cares about our wholeness and wellbeing, not perfect performance or self-improvement.

seeking depth and God’s withness over easy answers.

Does this feel like I’m reading your mail? (I’m not.) Stick around. Here we talk about rebuilding your faith and theology and Bible study without shame and shrinking ❤️

This little detail now stands out to me in a way I can’t ignore. God is in the business of drawing us near.

For Moses, the journey included miracles, facing down his own demons, and growing in trust and confidence.

What does the journey look like for you? In what ways has your trust and confidence in God grown?
