best tips for postpartum hair regrowth

May 21, 2020 · In: life, lifestyle, self care, wellness

Feeling the drain and stress of hair thinning? Want to learn my best tips for postpartum hair regrowth? Read on! This post contains affiliate links – see legal stuff here.

Postpartum hair loss can go on for years. (I know from experience.)

Throughout pregnancy, most women experience stronger, longer, and all-around prettier hair, due to the extra hormones going on in your body and new hair growth.

So when the hormone levels drop back to normal again, your body loses all that lovely new hair, and more besides. The structure of your hair can also change too.

I’ve had a hard time getting my hair to recover, even years later. And my hair is already fine and lacks volume. So it felt even more extreme.

And stressful. It made me feel like everyone could see it, like everyone was looking at my hair. I felt frantic to come up with a solution. It’s not the most important thing in the world, but it really made me feel self-conscious and anxious.

I feel like I tried everything when it comes to postpartum hair regrowth. And I’ve learned a lot.

The answer lies in taking a more holistic approach.

Yes, the right shampoo and conditioner are necessary, but also taking care of your body overall.

I’m no beauty blogger, but I do believe that mama’s wellness is an important thing, for her and the whole house. And if I can help save someone the stress and heartache that come from postpartum hair loss, then I’m happy to share.

Here are my best tips for postpartum hair regrowth, from a mom who has been there.

Please note – I’m not a medical professional. If you’re experiencing serious hair loss or other symptoms (like anxiety or depression), please see your doctor and make sure you’re on the right plan for your wellbeing. These are just things that have worked well in my experience, to consider in your process.

Superfoods

My overall wellness has increased so much since starting superfoods. I began looking into them because I would hear how great superfoods and probiotics are for your body and health, but I didn’t want to spend a fortune.

This superfood powder is an absolute game changer. It’s less than a lot of ones on the market. It acts as a gut cleanser, afternoon pick-me-up (with no caffeine), and gets you those extra nutrients that might not be making it into your diet daily.

Since I started taking it once every afternoon, I’ve been sleeping better, experiencing less tummy troubles, seen more glowing skin and less fine lines, and yes – hair that looks and feels more full. Probiotics help to balance out your hormones as well.

Biotin Supplements

Biotin is vitamin B3, and while it may not make your hair magically grow, scientific tests show that a lack of it can cause hair loss. So – taking it doesn’t hurt. It also supports your metabolism and strong nails.

Hormone Balancing Supplements

Magnesium and vitamin D3 are other recommended supplements to help regulate your hormones. (And probiotics, as mentioned above.) Again – please check with your doctor to make sure you’re getting what you personally need.

Shampoo

Get a shampoo that adds and doesn’t strip. Also – there are toxins present in common haircare that can actually make your hair worse. I aim for getting clean, toxin-free products whenever I can.

Watch out for fragrance – since companies are legally protected from sharing what makes up their fragrance compounds, it can happen that questionable ingredients get added in here that aren’t on the label.

This shampoo makes my hair feel refreshed and leaves it shiny, instead of stripping off the good oils that keep it looking good.

Conditioner

Choose a conditioner that doesn’t weigh your hair down. I like to apply it right after rinsing out my shampoo, and leaving it on for a few minutes to let it sink down deep.

I absolutely love the matching conditioner to the shampoo. It quenches my thirsty hair with superfood nutrients (and still has clean ingredients).

Scalp Care

Good hair isn’t just about how you wash it. You also need to stimulate and soothe your scalp to help generate hair growth. My scalp has become drier and itchier in the years following pregnancy.

Oils are a good option, and you can find some with natural hair growth ingredients like rosemary and castor oil. I like Kiehl’s Miracle Elixir, and I’m looking to try this 100% cold-pressed castor oil as well. Massage an oil into the scalp, leave for a few minutes, and wash out with shampoo in the shower.

Other helpful options are this scalp brush and this scalp revival oil, which promise to calm an itchy scalp and improve hair from the source.

Finally, be gentle on your hair and how you brush it! This is the only brand brush I’ve used in the past 5 or so years (except much prettier than my solid one).

Cut back on heat.

If you’re a chronic straightener or curler and use hot tools on your hair, try to go less or not at all. It can cause more breakage and damage.

Those are my best tips for tackling postpartum hair loss.

How about you?

Mine didn’t. Actually what I found was… …th Mine didn’t. Actually what I found was…

…that I have had seasons of “deconstruction” my whole life: reassessing my faith and making my beliefs my own. Not my family’s, not my ministry leader’s, not my church’s.

It’s a continuing journey, and every time God has put me face to face with an even bigger chasm to cross.

But can I tell you another truth? It keeps resulting in expanded, more joyful, more solid ground.

My questions haven’t been the end of my faith. It’s all part of the journey of growing closer to God.

By the way, I’m Jenn. If you’re in the messy middle, stick around. Let’s talk more about finding a healing, evolving, expansive faith.

We have a small container of dirt on our porch. We have a small container of dirt on our porch.

Dirt, and the teeniest, tiniest strawberry seeds.

Sometimes it feels silly to keep watering that thing when there hasn’t even been a shoot of green. But we do.

If you’re still waiting to see what’s going to happen, keep watering. Leave a ❤️ or 💧 if this connects for you (or leave your own story of something growing, plant or otherwise).

I don’t know if anyone has ever told you, but it’s okay for you to re-evaluate your faith and it’s okay for you to change your mind. God invites us to wonder, wander and wrestle.

Not back to fear-based discipleship and checklist Christianity.

Not when Jesus actually said, “you will find rest for your souls” (Mt 11:29), and the scriptures tell us it’s the Spirit that allows us to be “transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory.” (2 Cor 3:18)

True story…one day I was in church and it felt l True story…one day I was in church and it felt like everyone was staring at me.

Everyone could see all the horrible ways I was failing and falling short, I just knew it.

My breathing became labored, panicked, and I shakily stood up right in the middle of the sermon and pushed my baby’s stroller outside.

That was the point at which I realized I needed help. I started biblical counseling, a place where I was lovingly encouraged to rethink some of the scripts that had been on replay in my mind, directed back to scriptures that actually weren’t meant to shame me.

Since then, I’ve been on a healing, expanding faith journey that looks so different than it used to. It’s brought more, darker and more challenging seasons but also so much freedom, so much grace, so much of a bigger and more beautiful worldview. My faith is only growing.

Are you on a journey like that? What prompted a shift for you?
