Affirmations are a recurring theme on the blog lately. It’s making a choice to believe the positive about yourself, instead of giving in to the negative. I’m using them in my own life to work on my confidence, rather than tearing myself down. (Which seems to be the easier alternative.)
Do you know who also needs to hear affirmations? Our kids. Often I forget to say things to build up the people in my life that I care about. It’s not something that comes naturally to me. But often it is just what someone needs to hear. It spreads encouragement and security in a world that often leaves us questioning ourselves.
And our kids are no different. My son has been saying a lot, “I am STRONG and POWERFUL!” And I’m affirming that, because I want him to believe it. (I’m adding in “and kind” to remind him of that aspect too.) Also a friend recently told me of a victory with her daughter just from telling her, “I believe you can do it.”
These things are simple, and may even feel too obvious. But it shapes their perspective and world view. It can even impact how they see themselves in the future.
Here are some affirmations I’m finding the need to pass on to my kids now. I’m trying to practice now so that I continue to affirm them as they grow. And I’m hoping it helps them cultivate a positive, secure view of themselves, me, and our family.
What affirmations are helpful for your kids to hear?
