ways to support and encourage your husband

September 9, 2016 · In: marriage, relationships

Wife holding husband's arm

You may notice it’s so easy in the first few months to years of marriage to encourage your husband. It’s all heart-eye emojis and sentimental love notes for a while. It’s silly grins and hand-holding and playful banter. Sure, there might be some fights. But usually at the end of the day, you’re his number one fan.

But as your marriage goes on, it gets harder to purposefully build up your spouse.

Life gets more hectic. Job demands don’t slow down. You’re hanging out with other couples. Maybe kids enter the scene. You forget, you take things for granted, you just get cranky.

The past couple of weeks, I’ve had more chances than usual to show my husband support. Our anniversary was a couple months ago. He is teaching a class at church, and I can’t stop telling people how hard he is working on it, or encouraging them to sign up. He gave a lesson, and he did an amazing job.

Ways to Support and Encourage Your Husband

Let’s make this happen more often.

And not as an afterthought. It’s part of my job as a wife, and even as a mom. And I want that. I want my husband to feel respected, admired, seen, and heard. Because he’s great and he deserves it.

Plus I want my kids to see me build up their dad, not tear him down, or worse – be ambivalent towards him. It helps them respect their dad, gives them an example of building each other up, and helps them become more encouraging and supportive individuals themselves.

James takes notice in a big way when I support him. He feels the respect and love when I make a conscious effort. And I want him to feel that way all the time! He deserves it.

Here are some ways to support and encourage your husband:

  • Talk about him in a positive way – whether he’s there or not.
  • Thank him for the chores he takes care of, even the simplest ones.
  • Brag about his achievements to others, especially since he probably won’t do it himself.
  • Support his hobbies, talents and skills. Show up and cheer him on.
  • Ask for help with something he is good at.
  • Buy him a favorite treat, just because.
  • Ask questions about life, or how a certain project (personal or professional) is going. And just listen.
  • Tell him how great he is, in the spur of the moment.

Finally, bonus points! Here are some things that my hubby says encourage him, straight from the source:

  • Giving full attention (without the distraction of a cell phone, TV, etc)
  • Doing things that take care of our family
  • Hearing his requests and taking care of them

These are just a few ideas. What can you think of that encourages and builds up your husband? Sound off below!

Just clicked on this because I have been very active in doing these things. We had a huge spat a few months ago that cleared a lot of this disrespect/no love cycle. This is such a good list, totally reinforces what I’ve been doing. Good job on the effort to encourage us women back into supporting our husbands. This needs to spread!

I am so glad you came across this! So encouraging to hear that you are going after it as well – it is definitely something we need more of!

Truly, re-examining, unraveling, and renovating my faith helped me get to livin’.

If this post feels like I read your diary, please stick around! It’s been a busy summer, but I’m getting back to my writing routine and have so much to say about this journey.

And I really want you to hear this part: God is n And I really want you to hear this part:

God is not punitive like people can be.
And to take one verse out of context instead of lining it up with God’s character and heart for you is to miss the whole thing.

I just want you to know if that if the scriptures have felt (or been used) like weapons and your system has processed them that way—God isn’t demanding and disappointed like that. Not every verse is aimed at you or meant to be taken literally.

Read in the context of who God is: compassionate, gracious, abounding in love and faithfulness. Read in the context of the whole Bible: God’s story of reconciliation and redemption and restoration of Creation.

Maybe relax your shoulders, take a deep breath, and know you are loved and covered in grace.

This trend, but about what happens when you ditch This trend, but about what happens when you ditch performance and perfectionism for grace-filled growth.

This is not a to-do list, by the way. Not a resume or test or a title. (Not, “you are now proclaimed holy”.)

These are, I’ve found, holy experiences that get revealed as you take steps along this faith journey. This is what it looks like when you’re settling in to the transformation that happens when you lean in to the Spirit, follow Jesus, and get to know God better. A settling of the soul.

What kinda holy experiences have you encountered on your own unique journey with God?

Not to be dramatic, but… Everything changed when Not to be dramatic, but…
Everything changed when I started:

viewing stories of women in the scriptures with care and respect instead of making assumptions.

reading the Bible as God’s story, not morality tales about people.

recognizing that God cares about our wholeness and wellbeing, not perfect performance or self-improvement.

seeking depth and God’s withness over easy answers.

Does this feel like I’m reading your mail? (I’m not.) Stick around. Here we talk about rebuilding your faith and theology and Bible study without shame and shrinking ❤️
