Months ago, a sink side dish set broke me.
Yep – you read right.
I had seen oh-so-many advertisements, posts and reviews about Grove Collaborative, for years, but always felt hesitant. Free gifts, huh? There must be a catch.
But the constant ads and cheerful-while-cleaning faces were wearing me down. Finally, a free gift caught my eye – a pretty sink side set, plus more freebies than I knew what to do with.
Maybe I would actually like cleaning, if my sink looked like that, I said to myself as I clicked, “Add to Cart”. If I hate it, I can always cancel it later.
First of all, you need to know: I am that trial membership person that companies hate.
I’m the “sure I’ll sign up for a free membership (but I’ll also put 10 reminders in my phone to cancel it before you automatically renew it for me at some ridiculous price).”
So no one was more surprised than me, that at the end of my trial period, I willingly signed up to join as a VIP member.
Here’s my official (unsponsored) Grove Collaborative review.
How does Grove Collaborative work?
Grove is a shopping and shipment service that offers non-toxic and sustainable home and personal care products in a self-described flexible way. They even have a handy app that is easy to use.
Anyone can shop through Grove, with a flat shipping rate of $4.99 per order, and the ability to sign up for auto-renewal subscriptions.
The Grove VIP Membership offers the benefits of free shipping, free gifts throughout the year, and early access to sales and products.
When you become a member, you sign up for auto-shipments, and products you add to cart are automatically added to next month’s order. This might sound like a terrifying commitment to some, but there are pros and cons to this.
What I Love about Grove
The freebies are real. Every quarter they send a free gift with your order. And with every order, if you hit a minimum spend threshold, you can choose one of three (ever-changing) free gifts that are included.
Several reminders are sent before shipments. No more do I need to add ten reminders in my phone so that I don’t accidentally miss a shipping date and receive a box full of items I don’t need. Your personal shopper sends an email reminder a week and a day before orders are due to be shipped.
You can change your order, remove items you don’t need, and delay or cancel at any time.
(I.e. they’re not looking to prey on the forgetful.)
Customer service is excellent. If there’s a problem, Grove customer service handles it promptly and well. I’ve had issues with products or my account in the past, and both times, the issue was resolved quickly, and I felt good about how they handled it. They also write “thank you” on every single box.
Prices are competitive with Grove. They offer lots of sales on items we use all the time.
Environmentally friendly. All shipments are plastic-neutral and carbon offset. They also plant trees for every Seedling product purchased, and offer a lot of options for reusable items and plastic-free living.
It’s just convenient. Since joining Grove, I’ve found that we are always in stock with what we need at home. If we’re missing something, it’s easy to add it to my next order, and even bump up the shipment date if we need it fast.
What I Don’t Love
There will always be a couple cons – here are mine.
Purchased products are automatically added to your next order. If you order something once, it’s added to your next auto-shipment. So make sure you check your order every time. Otherwise it’s possible to receive something you don’t need.
Sometimes the free gift threshold goes too high. Most of the time I don’t spend $80-100 on orders. A few months after I joined, the threshold for free gifts went up. It’s gone up and down since, but it should be noted that you don’t always snag a freebie.
Shipping times vary. Grove isn’t Amazon Prime. It doesn’t get here in two days. And sometimes there are delays. (Although again, they are quick to apologize and make it right.)
Favorite Products at Grove
Hydrating Hand Sanitizer. The absolute BEST hand sanitizer for those prone to overdried, cracking hands. That’s because coconut oil is one of the ingredients. I’ve switch to these exclusively for hand sanitizers.
Hand Soap & Dispenser Set. We have replaced all the disposable hand soaps in our house with these glass dispensers and refill soap kits. We used to go through (and throw away) so many bottles, and now instead, we refill (which is less expensive, too).
Bar Soap. Speaking of soap – these bars last a long time, and smell fantastic, plus have a slight exfoliating texture. They’re all-natural ingredients (including fragrance!), and it’s a mild soap anyone can use.
Mrs. Meyer’s Dish Soap. Grove often has exclusive scents and discounts on our favorite dish soap. It’s biodegradable and safe for skin, and comes in all kinds of scents. (Lemon Verbena is my favorite for dishes.)
method Daily Wood Cleaner. Another popular brand that tends to get discounts on Grove. This spray is perfectly gentle on our mango wood table and gives it a nice shine.
Is Grove Collaborative Worth It?
It may not be for everyone. But even for this non-subscriber, Grove Collaborative made me a fan.
I really appreciate their customer service. They really care about their members, and the prices are usually right.
Plus with being in lockdown mode, it is so easy and accessible to get cleaning supplies right to my door.
