2019 defined: speak (my word of the year)

It’s go time, people! 2019 is upon us, and yes, I’m in full goal-setting mode, with my Cultivate What Matters PowerSheets. (Not sponsored, just love.) I like having the opportunity to reassess, to turn a blank page, and start fresh. Okay, so there’s nothing really magical about it, but can I just pretend please? It motivates me.

About a week or so ago, while coming up with my “Word of the Year,” several words would fly by, but none of them seemed to fit right. And then one word rang out perfectly clearly. One word to sum up how I want to embark on 2019.

Speak.

Honestly, it sounded odd right away. It’s not a noun or an adjective like words I’ve chosen in the past, like access, abundance, wholehearted, or brave.

At the same time, it felt so clear, and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

This year my main goal is to hear God’s voice clearer than anyone else’s.

Lately I’m realizing how much people’s words, including my own, define who I am and how I’m doing at life. Even to the point that that is almost my religion – like, how will I meet people’s expectations today? Am I doing things right according to people?

I want to hear God speak to me this year, to trust what he thinks of me, and to do what he wants me to do.

This year I want to connect more to my friends.

I have a bit of a phone call phobia. I don’t know what it is. But when I think about sitting down to make a phone call, I make an excuse or find something else to do. It’s not that I don’t want to talk to my friends. I guess I get anxious about what I share with them, if it will be enough, if what I’m doing and thinking and feeling matters. See above.

In 2019 I want to make more hang time and more phone calls – literally, speak – to build my friendships, new and old.

This year I want to stop making myself small.

I also have a bit of social anxiety. (I think it all relates to the first one, don’t you?) When I’m in public, I literally and figuratively make myself small. I hunch my shoulders, don’t make eye contact, mumble, and avoid confidently speaking wherever possible.

In this coming year, I want to speak up, to not assume being less-than, to walk in a room and feel like I belong as much as anyone else.

Speak Defined.

This verb feels oh-so-right to define my 2019.

The actual definition is fitting too (from the Oxford dictionary):

  • say something in order to convey information or to express a feeling
  • have a conversation
  • utter (a word, a message, etc)
  • communicate

How about you? What’s your word of the year? Or if not a word, maybe your goals?

I love my PowerSheets too! Thank you so much for sharing and being vulnerable. I’m hoping to be a more God focused and confident version of myself this year too!

Your first goal is MY FAVORITE THING EVER. You worded it so concisely and clearly, and it’s EXACTLY how I feel too. I want this year to be more time with Him, and less time busying myself with crap that does. not. matter. (Like Instagram numbers, as we’ve already discussed haha)

This trend, but about what happens when you ditch This trend, but about what happens when you ditch performance and perfectionism for grace-filled growth.

This is not a to-do list, by the way. Not a resume or test or a title. (Not, “you are now proclaimed holy”.)

These are, I’ve found, holy experiences that get revealed as you take steps along this faith journey. This is what it looks like when you’re settling in to the transformation that happens when you lean in to the Spirit, follow Jesus, and get to know God better. A settling of the soul.

What kinda holy experiences have you encountered on your own unique journey with God?

Not to be dramatic, but… Everything changed when Not to be dramatic, but…
Everything changed when I started:

viewing stories of women in the scriptures with care and respect instead of making assumptions.

reading the Bible as God’s story, not morality tales about people.

recognizing that God cares about our wholeness and wellbeing, not perfect performance or self-improvement.

seeking depth and God’s withness over easy answers.

Does this feel like I’m reading your mail? (I’m not.) Stick around. Here we talk about rebuilding your faith and theology and Bible study without shame and shrinking ❤️

For Moses, the journey included miracles, facing down his own demons, and growing in trust and confidence.

What does the journey look like for you? In what ways has your trust and confidence in God grown?
