This whole concept of a “capsule wardrobe” is a recent one for me. In the past, my method of shopping was, if it’s cute, and I could afford it, I would buy it. Pretty simple, but doesn’t make for a very cohesive closet. I felt like I had tons of clothes, but never any outfits to wear.
Suddenly it became a movement: shop with intention. Shop your closet. Instead of spending a lot on many unique pieces, invest in a few staples that can mix and match with each other.
This year, while I haven’t completely put together a complete capsule wardrobe, I have gathered a few fall essentials that I’ve been able to mix with each other to come up with great combos. It makes getting dressed a whole lot easier in the morning, when I know I can pick a pair of pants, for example, and have three or four outfit options to go with it.
Here’s the list. Most of them are the actual brand I have, some are not. (Affiliate links included.)
Tops:
- chambray shirt, another option
- plaid button-down, another option
- striped boatneck tee, another option
- gray v-neck tee, another option
- green cardigan, another option
- navy cardigan, another option
Outerwear:
Pants:
- boyfriend jeans, another option
- army green crops, another option
- cranberry khaki crops, another option
- white jeans, another option
Dress:
Accessories:
Shoes:
To follow that, here are some easy outfit ideas you can put together. These certainly aren’t all the options, but this will give you a start.
What are your fall wardrobe essentials?

Thanks for these great ideas. I’ve been meaning to go through my closet and pull out a core set of items for the fall and this is great motivation! Sadly, we’re having an unseasonably cold autumn this year, so I need to include some heavy sweaters and a warm jacket!
You are so welcome! I have been working on having a capsule wardrobe for such a long time, but I’m so sentimental, there’s a lot of stuff I haven’t been able to give up yet. Our fall has been so all over the place! Cold in the morning, 75 by lunch – it’s crazy! I’ll probably be at heavy sweaters and warm jackets by November, though!
Great tips! You can never go wrong with these items as staples!
À LA MODEST – Replacing insecurities with inspiration!
Thanks! I agree. It makes getting dressed in the morning that much easier 😉
I’m all about a cute denim jacket!
Ditto that! 🙂
Love these ideas. Ive been tempted to do the capsule wardrobe but it looks like a lot of work. I wish I could hire you!

It is a lot of work. Ha ha, I would love to be hired to do something like that, but you probably would want someone more professional than me 🙂
I love all of the plaid shirt options. Plaid is very cute in the fall. I will be pairing my closet down after our move, and I’m looking forward to using some of these ideas. Thanks !
I’m so glad it’s helpful! That plaid shirt has been one of the best additions to my wardrobe for fall/winter 🙂
I love your fall essentials! These are all must haves, but especially the denim jacket! I live in mine during the fall.

I just picked mine up, and I love it! It goes with so much!
These looks are perfect for fall! I love all of the stripes and plaid!

Thank you! 🙂
Love this! These are definitely some of my fall favorite type of pieces too. And I’m in pretty much this same spot with the capsule thing – I didn’t specifically do one this season, but picking some essentials really does make getting dressed so much easier and more fun. Love the plaid + vest + cognac boots look especially.
I so wish I could really stick to a capsule, but definitely agree to the staples – they make life so much easier!
I love it all! I need to add a few of these things to my wardrobe!
They are such versatile pieces! Love that getting dressed doesn’t take hours 🙂
I love this post! I am currently obsessed with olive. I really need to get an olive utility vest and a utility jacket. Oh and a pair of brown booties!
Thanks! Olive everything – who knew it goes with so much??
HI!
I gotta get some white jeans! Great post and site! I found you on FB GYB page. Let me know if you’d like to collaborate, be a guest writer with links back to your blog (or vice versa), or get together to do a giveaway with some other bloggers, just support each other in some way. My site is http://www.4hourbodygirl.com.
All the best,
Heather
Thank you so much! I will definitely check out your page! 🙂
Love the outfits and how you matched them up! I could see me rocking these for sure!
Thanks so much! That’s the goal – I’m definitely much more everyday style than high fashion 😉
I love these looks! so simple but easy enough to look put together!
Thank you! It makes getting dressed that much easier 😉
Well done! You’ve chosen well and the possibilities are limitless. I think it’s true that we all wear the same few things over and over anyhow….better to not have so much clutter in the way of those great pieces!
Thank you! I totally agree. I’ve ended up spending more money on lots of random pieces, rather than investing money on just the staples – it’s making a difference, especially in closet space, to go about it differently.
I love these items. Those booties are perfect, thanks for sharing! 🙂
Thank you! I still have a hard time wearing them – they aren’t really “me” – but they’re so cute they’re hard to resist!
Great looks. I love the denim and the check shirt..
Thanks! The check shirt is my fave.
Love this!
My entire fall wardrobe consists of basic tops with cardigans, jeans and flats or booties…at least on the weekends.
xoxo, Jenny
I’m with you. That’s pretty much my fall uniform!
These are some great selections! My essential includes have a jean jacket, wearing green olive colors, and boots!
Olive is such a great color! I’ve never thought of it as a neutral until this year. It goes with so much! And boots and jean jackets for sure 🙂
I really love this! I read about the wardrobe capsule awhile back, but could never commit. These past few months though, I have realized I have tons of clothes but not many outfits. So I have started cleaning out my closet piece by piece and trying to replace it with staple items. I also turned all of my hangers backwards, so each time I wear a piece, I turn it the correct way. In six months, whatever I haven’t worn that isn’t seasonal or special occasion, I’m going to donate!
The same thing happened to me, which is pretty disappointing, right? I’ve heard of the hanger trick! I’ve been scared to try it, ha ha 😉 The other part is I’m still trying to lose baby weight, so I’m hoping I can still rock some things, but if it doesn’t go, the clothes definitely have to!
Great tips and I see that we share a similar style. I should organize and shop my closet!
It’s not necessarily the best way for everyone – but it’s been super helpful for me! 🙂
