30 cleaning tasks that take 5 minutes or less

January 17, 2020 · In: home, productivity

Typically my house-cleaning is a last-minute endeavor.

Maybe the day before someone comes over (and that’s if I’ve planned well), you’ll find me scrambling to tidy up, wipe dust from the mantle, sweep, clean the toilets, etc, etc.

My husband is the more organized out of the two of us. He’s the type of person to unpack his suitcase right when he gets home from a trip. And because of osmosis, now I am, too. But typically, I’m the messy one.

And rushing through the cleaning has become a typical thing for me. I’m used to my habits.

But there is an easier way to do it.

It’s called cleaning as you go.

I don’t always have all day to clean, but I usually can find good five-minute chunks of time. And if you utilize those moments, you can actually get a lot accomplished.

That way when it comes time to really clean, you don’t have to be overwhelmed. You can save it for the big jobs – the things like windows, scrubbing the tub, etc.

And then I can get back to straight chilling. And by “straight chilling,” I mean chasing my kids around the house and cleaning up after them as they go.

Here are 30 cleaning tasks that each take 5 minutes or less.

Take advantage of a few minutes here and there to get these tasks out of the way, and cut down your preparation time for when friends come over by a lot.

1. Empty small wastebaskets.
2. Put away clean dishes.
3. Make your bed.
4. Clear the dining room/main eating table.
5. Sweep one room’s floor.
6. Clean just-used dishes.
7. Take out the trash.
8. Spray and wipe down kitchen countertops.
9. Dust surfaces of one room.
10. Put in a load of laundry.
11. Put away personal belongings in one room.
12. Organize shoes.
13. Spray down plastic toys (I use a half-vinegar, half-water mixture) and let dry.
14. Throw away old receipts and mail.
15. Dust ceiling fans and lighting fixtures.

16. Surface-clean toilet and faucets in the bathroom.
17. Put away laundry (folding is another matter).
18. Spray and wipe down mirrors.
19. Mop/wipe down floor of one room.
20. Tidy shelves on a bookcase or bedside table.
21. Gather grimy washcloths, towels and dishrags and add them to the laundry basket; replace with fresh ones.
22. Surface-clean top of oven.
23. Disinfect doorknobs and handles.
24. Rearrange kitchen cabinet shelves (or just one).
25. Take down outdated items from the refrigerator door.
26. Take off old sheets and replace with fresh ones.
27. Clear cobwebs.
28. Vacuum the carpet or spray and wipe down the hardwood floors of one room.
29. Run a clean cycle on the dishwasher or clean kitchen items you use every day, like drying racks and water pitchers.
30. Clear old or expired food from fridge and shelves.

Of course some of these things depend on your house, and how you clean typically.

How about you?

What 5-minute cleaning chores can you think of to knock out ahead of time?

Thank you! It’s always encouraging to know that my little odds and ends are helpful to someone! I like quick things too. I like to finish them, and then add them to my to-do list…just so I can check them off 😉

Love this! I can find 5 minutes a couple of times a day… such a good idea to have a go-to list of how you can make use of it really well!

I don’t know if anyone has ever told you, but it’s okay for you to re-evaluate your faith and it’s okay for you to change your mind. God invites us to wonder, wander and wrestle.

She’s not going back. Not back to fear-based di She’s not going back.

Not back to fear-based discipleship and checklist Christianity.

Not when Jesus actually said, “you will find rest for your souls” (Mt 11:29), and the scriptures tell us it’s the Spirit that allows us to be “transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory.” (2 Cor 3:18)

True story…one day I was in church and it felt l True story…one day I was in church and it felt like everyone was staring at me.

Everyone could see all the horrible ways I was failing and falling short, I just knew it.

My breathing became labored, panicked, and I shakily stood up right in the middle of the sermon and pushed my baby’s stroller outside.

That was the point at which I realized I needed help. I started biblical counseling, a place where I was lovingly encouraged to rethink some of the scripts that had been on replay in my mind, directed back to scriptures that actually weren’t meant to shame me.

Since then, I’ve been on a healing, expanding faith journey that looks so different than it used to. It’s brought more, darker and more challenging seasons but also so much freedom, so much grace, so much of a bigger and more beautiful worldview. My faith is only growing.

Are you on a journey like that? What prompted a shift for you?

Worship music doesn’t quite hit on grief the sam Worship music doesn’t quite hit on grief the same way as lyrics like,

“I do not find worthiness in virtue,
I no longer try to be good,
It didn’t keep me safe
like you told me it would”

You know what? I think it’s okay not to skip ahead to singing about victory. It’s okay to find language to express the season you’re in. (See the Psalms.)

In this season of re-evaluating my faith, here’s a sample of my de(and re)construction playlist:

Sympathy Magic - Florence + the Machine
Good News - Shaboozy
So Long London - Taylor Swift
Amen - Beyoncé
Lady Lady - Olivia Dean
Returning to Myself - Brandi Carlile
Vienna - Billy Joel

How about you? What would you add?

Stick around if you need a friend for when your faith shifts ❤️

We don’t talk about this part of de/reconstructi We don’t talk about this part of de/reconstruction enough:

our part in an unhealthy culture that promoted striving and shame over rest and grace.

For me, there were scriptures and good intentions, but also pride, insecurity, unrealistic standards, and simply, “this is just the way we do things.”

I’m sorry for the times I was led by people-pleasing and discipled by fear, and prompted others to do the same. I’m sorry for speaking before listening, and for caring more about keeping things status quo than having the hard conversations and seeing other perspectives.

When I wrote that sentence above years ago, I didn’t expect to end up leaving that community. It’s one of the most complicated, difficult things I’ve had to do, but one that was necessary.

If you’re grappling with complicated feelings about shifting and rebuilding your faith, I get it. Pull up a seat, and let’s keep the conversation going.
