10 bible verses for when you feel less-than

January 7, 2020 · In: inspiration, self care, wellness

Woman holding Bible looking away, feeling less-than.

Once again this year, my insecurity reared its ugly head. It’s something I’ve always battled, worrying about what people think. You might know the feeling – when you feel less-than. But every year, sometimes twice a year, it gets exposed in my life in an ugly way.

It’s a downward spiral. I feel like I’m less beautiful than, less smart than, less spiritual than, less creative than, less kind than, and less all around spectacular than everyone else. (OR less than beautiful, etc – you get the picture.)

Basically, I get stuck feeling not good enough.

I’m cringing as I write that, because how self-obsessed does that make me? But that’s the truth. I compare myself to others most of the time, and often come up short.

I’m also learning that a big part of security is choosing to believe in your value as God sees it, not what you feel your value is.

I had friends point out the following to me: When I compare myself to others, it’s as if I’m telling God that what he gave me and how he made me is not good enough.

When I don’t believe in my value as God sees it, as written in his Word, I’m calling him a liar.

Instead of believing the lies in my head, I’ve been focusing on reading and believing the truth. And the truth is, that I am of great worth to God, that he cares about my well-being, and that he is with me.

How about you? Do you relate? Is it time for a reality check?

Here are 10 Bible verses for when you feel “less-than”.

“Show me the wonders of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in your form their foes. Keep me as the apple of your eye, hide me in the shadow of your wings.” – Psalm 17:7-8 NIV

“You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great.” – Psalm 18:35 NIV

“The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” – Zephaniah 3:17 NIV

Psalm 18:35 Bible verse for when you feel less-than.

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” – Psalm 139:13-14 NIV

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10 NIV

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:37-39 NIV

Romans 8:37 Bible verse for when you feel less-than.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love, he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.” – Ephesians 1:3-5 NIV

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glorious goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” – 2 Peter 1:3-4 NIV

“Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.” – Psalm 4:3 NIV

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” – Luke 12:6-7 NIV

Thanks for sharing this, Jenn! What a great list to have, I’ll be saving it ? I’m always drawn back to 2 Corinthians 12:9 when I’m feeling weak and “not enough”

Needed this tonight. I have had people try to make me feel bad because I don’t have to have makeup on 24/7 and always be dressed for the prom. I am feeling low because my husband says I don’t take pride in myself.

I’m sorry to hear that! I hope the scriptures help. Sometimes things come out badly – maybe your husband just wants you to look and feel your best? And I feel ya – I can feel so judged when I’m not dressed to the nines or have makeup on. We can take so much confidence in how God sees us <3

I was searching for some scriptures for praying over my 14 yr old. She is feeling so less than comparing herself to her 18 year old sister.
    THESE ARE AWESOME
Plus I will use them for me and all my ladies. Thank you!

We are so blessed in Christ xo

So, so encouraged that these will be helpful for you and your daughter! It’s so amazing how God works – I usually just write something I’m going through, and am always so grateful that it helps more than just me 🙂 Sending a prayer for her too!

True story…one day I was in church and it felt l True story…one day I was in church and it felt like everyone was staring at me.

Everyone could see all the horrible ways I was failing and falling short, I just knew it.

My breathing became labored, panicked, and I shakily stood up right in the middle of the sermon and pushed my baby’s stroller outside.

That was the point at which I realized I needed help. I started biblical counseling, a place where I was lovingly encouraged to rethink some of the scripts that had been on replay in my mind, directed back to scriptures that actually weren’t meant to shame me.

Since then, I’ve been on a healing, expanding faith journey that looks so different than it used to. It’s brought more, darker and more challenging seasons but also so much freedom, so much grace, so much of a bigger and more beautiful worldview. My faith is only growing.

Are you on a journey like that? What prompted a shift for you?

“I do not find worthiness in virtue,
I no longer try to be good,
It didn’t keep me safe
like you told me it would”

You know what? I think it’s okay not to skip ahead to singing about victory. It’s okay to find language to express the season you’re in. (See the Psalms.)

In this season of re-evaluating my faith, here’s a sample of my de(and re)construction playlist:

We don’t talk about this part of de/reconstructi We don’t talk about this part of de/reconstruction enough:

our part in an unhealthy culture that promoted striving and shame over rest and grace.

For me, there were scriptures and good intentions, but also pride, insecurity, unrealistic standards, and simply, “this is just the way we do things.”

I’m sorry for the times I was led by people-pleasing and discipled by fear, and prompted others to do the same. I’m sorry for speaking before listening, and for caring more about keeping things status quo than having the hard conversations and seeing other perspectives.

When I wrote that sentence above years ago, I didn’t expect to end up leaving that community. It’s one of the most complicated, difficult things I’ve had to do, but one that was necessary.

If you’re grappling with complicated feelings about shifting and rebuilding your faith, I get it. Pull up a seat, and let’s keep the conversation going.

You can surrender and keep moving forward in obedience until God calls you to do something else. Or surrender might mean laying down your efforts.

Discernment comes with the practices of listening to God, prayer, and having the scriptures on your heart, as well as advice from trusted people.
